Abstract
I combine ideas and data from different papers to highlight the importance of selection for preferences and stereotypes. Using data on the general population, finance academics, CFAs, and directors, I show that preferences vary across occupations. As a result, gender gaps in preferences may also vary across occupations. Using the financial crisis and the sustainability movement, I illustrate why understanding selection matters.
