He laid the groundwork for conscious rap through spoken word and fearless social commentary, drawing on the East Coast jazz poets of the Harlem Renaissance to turn poetry into a political force. Decades later, Kendrick Lamar picked up the mic and carried that same tradition forward, rooted in West Coast hip-hop and built for the mainstream stage. When he quoted "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised" during his Super Bowl halftime show, he was pointing straight back to where it all started.
