Marcel Powell et David Linx se sont rencontrés en 2011 à Paris par le biais du frère de Marcel, Philippe Powell, alors qu’ils participaient tous à un concert organisé à l’occasion de la commémoration des dix ans de la mort du fameux guitariste brésilien Baden Powell (1937-2000), père de Marcel et Philippe. Au fil des ans, les deux artistes ont noué des liens quasiment fraternels et créé une complicité naturelle fondée notamment sur leurs goûts communs pour plusieurs artistes brésiliens. Les liens de David avec le Brésil sont d’ailleurs anciens : il entretient de longue date des collaborations suivies notamment avec Philippe Powell, Ivan Lins, Lenine ou Hamilton de Holanda.
Ce n’est cependant que depuis 2022 que David et Marcel se produisent chaque année en duo. Leurs concerts ont immédiatement témoigné d’une profonde complicité musicale. Après quelques prestations en public, l’idée d’enregistrer un album en duo est venue de Marcel et a immédiatement reçu l’appui enthousiaste d’Henri Greindl, producteur et directeur artistique du label indépendant belge Mogno Music, qui avait déjà produit en 2024 l’album solo de Marcel Powell « Horizon » sur lequel David chante « Bilhete » d’Ivan Lins, album qui a reçu de très bons échos dans la presse jazz.
Le choix du répertoire du duo s’est fait assez naturellement en évitant les clichés. David et Marcel ont sélectionné des morceaux principalement écrits par des compositeurs brésiliens hormis deux standards internationaux. Un morceau original de Marcel, « Nosa », dont la musique a été écrite en collaboration avec le pianiste brésilien Gilson Peranzzetta, a reçu des paroles de David. Le texte est inspiré d’une rencontre fortuite, sur un quai de gare en Italie, entre David et Nosa, jeune femme d’origine nigérienne. Enfin, lors des sessions d’enregistrement, Henri Greindl a suggéré au duo de rajouter deux pièces originales en solo : Marcel a proposé « O meu amor », une composition en collaboration avec la guitariste Daniela Soledade et David a écrit « And then… », titre sur lequel il se multiplie vocalement sur plusieurs pistes.
Le processus créatif des arrangements a été assez intuitif tout en étant le produit de nombreuses séances de travail en commun jusqu’à ce que cette interaction constante produise les magnifiques et très originales interprétations qu’on découvre sur cet album.
La liberté d’exploration musicale et la mise à nu qu’entraine la formule à deux est très inspirante et énormément appréciée par David et Marcel qui possèdent tout deux une exceptionnelle maîtrise mélodique, harmonique et rythmique. Outre les qualités musicales de ces deux grands musiciens, les liens quasiment fraternels qu’ils ont noués avant même de jouer ensemble créent une complicité naturelle et permettent une communication exceptionnelle débouchant sur une alchimie particulièrement créative : le résultat est un album empreint d’une émotion intense.

MARCEL POWELL - Marcel Powell a son propre accent. Il est impossible de ne pas associer sa musique à celle de son maître et père, qui a laissé son empreinte dans l'histoire de la guitare. Unique élève de son père pendant 10 ans, le fils virtuose suit les traces de son père et enchante le public. Né à Paris en 1982, il a enregistré douze albums en tant que compositeur dont deux avec son père et son frère, le pianiste Philippe Powell basé en France. Installé à Rio de Janeiro, Marcel Powell s'inscrit dans le prolongement de l'expression musicale de l'âme brésilienne revendiquant ses ascendances ibériques, noires et européennes.
DAVID LINX - Bruxellois de culture mais parisien d’adoption, formé au contact de grands musiciens américains, David Linx est, sinon le plus grand, en tout cas l’un des plus formidables chanteurs de jazz que l’on puisse entendre, doublé d’un homme de scène au grand cœur. David Linx a reçu récemment le prix Octave d’Honneur en Belgique pour l’ensemble de sa carrière, le Prix Edison pour le meilleur album de l’année 2017 (« Brel » avec le Brussels Jazz Orchestra) et a été de nombreuses fois récompensé en France : Prix Charles Cros, Prix de l’Académie du Jazz, Victoires du Jazz.

Pas sinds 2022 treden David en Marcel echter elk jaar op als duo. Hun concerten getuigden meteen van een diepe muzikale compliciteit. Na enkele liveoptredens kwam Marcel met het idee om een duoalbum op te nemen. Dit idee kreeg meteen de enthousiaste steun van Henri Greindl, producer en artistiek directeur van het Belgische onafhankelijke label Mogno Music, dat in 2024 al het soloalbum “Horizon” van Marcel Powell had geproduceerd, waarop David “Bilhete” van Ivan Lins zingt, een album dat zeer goed onthaald werd in de jazzpers.
De keuze van het repertoire van het duo kwam heel natuurlijk tot stand, zonder clichés. David en Marcel hebben voornamelijk stukken van Braziliaanse componisten geselecteerd, met uitzondering van twee internationale standards. Een origineel stuk van Marcel, “Nosa”, waarvan de muziek in samenwerking met de Braziliaanse pianist Gilson Peranzzetta werd geschreven, kreeg een tekst van David. De tekst is geïnspireerd op een toevallige ontmoeting op een perron in Italië tussen David en Nosa, een jonge vrouw van Nigerese afkomst. Tijdens de opnamesessies stelde Henri Greindl uiteindelijk voor dat het duo twee originele solostukken zou toevoegen: Marcel stelde “O meu amor” voor, een compositie in samenwerking met gitariste Daniela Soledade, en David schreef “And then...”, een nummer waarop hij zijn stem op verschillende tracks vermenigvuldigt.
Het creatieve proces van de arrangementen was vrij intuïtief, maar het resultaat van vele sessies waarin ze samenwerkten, totdat deze voortdurende interactie leidde tot de prachtige en zeer originele interpretaties die we op dit album ontdekken.
De vrijheid van muzikale verkenning en de soberheid die de tweemansformule met zich meebrengt, is zeer inspirerend en wordt enorm gewaardeerd door David en Marcel, die beiden beschikken over een uitzonderlijke beheersing van melodie, harmonie en ritme. Over the years, the two artists have forged almost fraternal ties and created a natural complicity based in particular on their common tastes for several Brazilian artists. David's links with Brazil are also long-standing: he has long maintained ongoing collaborations with Philippe Powell, Ivan Lins, Lenin and Hamilton de Holanda, among others.
However, it is only since 2022 that David and Marcel have been performing every year as a duo. Their concerts immediately showed a deep musical complicity.
