Filafriques, the new contemporary african art in Geneva is thrilled to announce the coming solo show « MES-TISSAGES », first solo show of Maliza Kiasuwa in Geneva Switzerland, from June 14th to July 31th in the new location of the gallery in Geneva.
About the exhibition:
"Each work I create is a thread drawn from my history, my multiple origins, my interwoven heritages. The title of this exhibition, MES-TISSAGES, reflects this essential gesture: that of weaving, knotting together materials, cultures, traditions and contemporary forms. I am the fruit of many traditions, many beliefs, many languages, many skins. My body and mind carry the memory of this complexity, and it's this richness that I summon up in my work. The materials I use - natural, raw or transformed - interact with each other to form a whole between suspension and anchorage, between floating identities and materials. MES-TISSAGES is a place where contradictions coexist, where tensions become fertile, where aesthetics become ethics, and where art becomes an act of memory, balance and reconciliation. About the artist:
A self-taught Belgian artist with Afro-descendant roots, is a visual artist whose work spans painting, collage, and sculpture.She grew up between Brussels and Kinshasa and has exhibited in Kenya, England, the United States, Switzerland, and Italy. After 10 years in Kenya, she has been based in Brussels since 2023. By combining handmade materials with industrial objects, she embraces the inherent character and vocabulary of the chosen material and transfigure its context through sewing and repairing to produce unexpected narratives. As a visual artist of both European and African descent, she aim to bring a cross-border perspective into my work, viewing the coexistence of two worlds as an inexhaustible source of inspiration and a potential space for dialogue. Her sculptures and collages are made from pieces she collects: cotton threads, hand-made ropes made from straw or rubber, raffia, and Lufha. These materials represent culture and history within the context of the overconsumption of the global flow.

A propos de l'exposition:
" Chaque œuvre que je crée est un fil tiré de mon histoire, de mes origines multiples, de mes héritages imbriqués. Le titre de cette exposition, MES-TISSAGES reflète ce geste essentiel : celui de tisser, de nouer ensemble des matières, des cultures, des traditions et des formes contemporaines. Je suis le fruit de plusieurs traditions, de plusieurs croyances, de plusieurs langues, de plusieurs peaux. Mon corps et mon esprit portent la mémoire de cette complexité, et c’est cette richesse que je convoque dans mon travail. Les matières que j’utilise — naturelles, brutes ou transformées — dialoguent entre elles et forment un ensemble entre suspension et ancrage entre flottement des identités et des matières. MES-TISSAGES un lieu où les contradictions cohabitent, où les tensions deviennent fécondes, où l’esthétique devient éthique, et où l’art devient acte de mémoire, d’équilibre et de réconciliation." A propos de l'artiste:
Artiste autodidacte belge avec des origines Afrodescendants est plasticienne, son travail touche aussi bien la peinture , les collages et la sculpture.Elle a grandi entre Bruxelles et Kinshasa et a exposé au Kenya, en Angleterre, aux États-Unis, en Suisse et en Italie.Après 10 ans au Kenya, elle est basée à Bruxelles depuis 2023. Combinant des matériaux fabriqués à la main avec des objets industriels , elle embrasse le caractère et le vocabulaire antérieurs du matériau choisi, et transfigure leur contexte en cousant et réparant pour produire des récits inattendus. En tant qu'artiste visuelle d'origine européenne et africaine, elle essaie d’apporter une perspective transfrontalière dans son travail qui considère la coexistence de deux mondes comme une source inépuisable d'inspiration et un espace potentiel de dialogue. Ses sculptures et collages sont faits de pièces qu’elle collectionne : des fils de coton, des cordes faites à la main en paille ou en caoutchouc, du rafia et du Lufha. Ces matériaux sont représentatifs de culture et d’histoire dans un contexte de surconsommation du flux mondial.
