Webinar : Prospective Life Cycle Assessment of Future Hydrogen Production
Description
In the context of rapid development and transition of the hydrogen sector, there is a recent and increasing demand for environmental assessment of hydrogen production and use, using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method. To meet the ambition to use LCA results to guide decision-making, there is a need to develop tools to better model complex systems in an unknown future.
Therefore, a study has been conducted by Mines Paris-PSL and the Paul Scherrer Institute to answer the following question:
How to better assess the environmental impact of future hydrogen production?
The study conducted focuses on the production of hydrogen by electrolysis in France by 2050 and aims to:
- Give recommendations to guide methodological choices for modeling LCA of hydrogen production
- Present modeling options that aim to incorporate prospective, temporal and spatial considerations in the modeling of future scenarios and show how these choices affect the results.
- Illustrate what is possible to do with the open-source Python libraries available for LCA, including generating a web platform.
Below are listed the Python libraries that were used and what they were used for:
- Premise : modeling prospective markets for electricity.
- lca_algebraic and Brightway: developing parameterized life cycle inventories for hydrogen production.
- Streamlit : creating a user-friendly web platform that requires no coding skills to be used.
Detailed content
The detailed content will expand upon the material presented at the SETAC Gothenburg conference, in October 2024, providing more in-depth analysis and elaborating on each modeling decision made during the LCA:
- Part I : Romain Sacchi - IAM models and global prospective scenarios.
- Part II : Joanna Schlesinger – French prospective scenario modelling based on RTE study, Futurs Energétiques 2050.
- Part III : Juliana Steinbach – Prospective Hydrogen Production.
