Lecture

Everyday sexism in the age of AI

Extreme misogyny is flourishing online, boosted by a form of algorithmically-facilitated mass radicalisation we have never experienced before. We stand on the precipice of a new society transformed by AI, a society in which new technologies risk embedding existing inequalities into its very foundation. How do we move forward without repeating the mistakes of the past? How do we fight a problem that so many people still refuse to see? From biased algorithms to deepfake abuse and AI girlfriends, feminist activist and bestselling author Laura Bates will explore the unprecedented threats this moment presents, and some of the ways we can effectively tackle the problem.

About the speaker

Laura Bates is a best-selling author, keynote speaker and founder of the Everyday Sexism Project. Her books include Everyday Sexism, Men Who Hate Women and The New Age of Sexism. Laura writes regularly for the New York Times, Guardian and others.

She works closely with government, schools, businesses, police forces and bodies from the United Nations to the Council of Europe on sexism and inequality.
