About

Highly viscous gels based on PVA-borax, developed by Andrea del Bianco and Augusto Giuffredi, provide an efficient alternative for cleaning fragile surfaces, including painted and water-sensitive areas. These gels offer remarkable versatility, as they can incorporate various organic solvents (both aqueous and non-aqueous miscible), chelating agents, and surfactants. Their excellent mechanical properties include easy adaptation to surface roughness, minimal penetration, high retention capacity, effortless removal, and transparency, allowing for monitoring of the cleaning process.

This workshop will explore these properties through theoretical discussions on system formulation, practical production of various gels, and hands-on testing and assessment of results.

It will take place on 13 and 14 March 2025 and will be held in English. The first day will be devoted to theory and will be available both face-to-face and online. Registration is free but compulsory. The second day, devoted to practice, is subject to a fee (€55) and places are limited.

Workshop will be given by Maria Aguiar (Painting Conservator)
Maria Aguiar holds a PhD in Painting Conservation from the Escola das Artes, Universidade Católica Portuguesa (EA-UCP). She also earned an MA in Conservation and Restoration of Historical Objects of Art from De Montfort University (UK) and an MA in Conservation of Fine Art from Northumbria University (UK) in 2002. Maria is an Assistant Professor at EA-UCP, where she has been teaching conservation-restoration since 2002. She is an integrated research member of CITAR and has served as a board member of the European Network for Conservation-Restoration Education (ENCoRE) since 2022. She has also represented EA-UCP in ENCoRE since 2014.
